Jerwood Makers Open

2013

‘Sea of Faith’

Hand stitch on wool, 250 x 150cm

In 2013 I was one of the selected artists for the Jerwood Makers Open award (now the Jerwood Art Fund Makers Open), which culminated in a touring exhibition beginning at the Jerwood Space in London, then to the Pier Arts Centre in Orkney and the Ruthin Craft Centre in Wales.

This commission enabled me to embark on a research trip to India to visit the Kumbh Mela festival in Allahabad, where I worked with aerial photographers to gather first hand imagery to create my most personally significant work of the ‘Interpersonal Spatial Arrangement’ series.

The other four artists selected in 2013 were:

Maisie Broadhead, Linda Brothwell, Adam Buick, Nahoko Kojima

“I wanted to be able to have an even greater depth of meaning to my work, and gain an insight into the nature of this particular crowd. It is the largest gathering of humans on the planet and I was intrigued to see first hand that number of people in one place, and experience the faith and devotion that drives so many to the river Ganges for this celebration.”
